On August 5, 2012 the NASA Mars rover Curiosity made the most precise landing ever attempted. In fact, the number of mechanisms required to occur in perfect sequence in only seven short minutes led to the landing being referred to as ”7 minutes of terror“. The Curiosity was launched on November 26, 2011. NASA has launched two twin Mars rovers before, the Spirit and the Opportunity. What makes the Curiosity so special? The primary objective of this mission is to conclusively determine if Mars has ever supported life, and study the climate and geology of the planet. The Curiosity will lay also groundwork for a future human mission to Mars. How much did this mission cost? US$2.5 billion.
